Social Concern and Policy Considerations Regarding Men's Health Issues (Part 1)
This is a public issue at all levels. Gender health is such a public issue. This is true for women's health, and even more so for men's health.
2. The scope of men's health issues: family and society
Men's health is a public issue because it hasn't received the same level of attention as women's health. It may seem absent from the public eye, but this doesn't mean it lacks public relevance. Ignoring it means its negative impacts go unnoticed, and no measures are taken to mitigate them. This means that men's health issues will only truly enter the public consciousness when they have serious consequences and threaten society (primarily families).
The essence of men's health issues is whether men have the normal physiological and psychological capacity to fulfill the obligations and responsibilities prescribed by their gender roles in the major areas of family, career, and society, and if such capacity is impaired, whether they have sufficient personal or social strength to overcome the obstacles.
The issues here can be divided into two aspects: ① Whether a male, as a biological organism, possesses healthy physiological functions and a sound psychological foundation is a general medical health issue; ② Whether a male, with specific gender characteristics, possesses healthy physiological functions and a sound psychological foundation is a male sexual health issue.
Numerous facts demonstrate that men's health, often overlooked in the public eye, suffers from serious problems in both areas. This puts pressure on families, workplaces, and all aspects of society. Male sexual dysfunction in marriage is becoming a major cause of discord in many families; in other words, more and more couples are realizing that this problem is the root cause of their marital discord. In the workplace, the main problems are the lack of energy or psychological stress among middle-aged men, preventing them from fully realizing their potential, and the waste of male human resources is gradually becoming apparent.
II. Key Points to Consider Regarding Men's Health Issues
1. Physiological-psychological-sociocultural levels
Men's health issues have always been a complex problem involving physiological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors, especially in the field of sexual health. Numerous cases exist where psychological and socio-cultural factors lead to confusion in men's sex lives. In different regions of China, varying regulations regarding male sexual roles often shape different patterns of male sexual behavior, many of which cannot be considered healthy or beneficial.
2. Men's health knowledge, ethics, responsibilities, and male roles
Education on men's health rarely involves merely supplementing or correcting knowledge (such as using scientific sex education to correct "knowledge" men have acquired from unscientific sources). In China's most popular sex education textbooks, the emphasis on sexual morality and responsibility often overshadows the transmission of other knowledge. However, men's health issues do indeed involve moral and responsibility issues beyond the realm of pure knowledge. Different socio-cultural backgrounds emphasize morality and responsibility differently, and their methods of implementation vary. However, this is not the crux of the problem. The crux is that abundant evidence shows that the increase in knowledge and the enhancement of morality and responsibility are not only not mutually reinforcing, but in many cases, they tend to be contradictory. Many individual men and even groups of men themselves are often perplexed by this, and society as a whole may not have a suitable explanation for this contradiction.
3. Changes in the meaning of health with age
On an individual level, male development is a process of continuous physiological change, accompanied by psychological changes and the ongoing convergence of gender roles within socio-cultural structures. For example, with age, men begin to be assigned the roles of husband, father, and pillar of their profession. Men's health has different focuses at different ages, and even within the same age group, health issues can have various meanings. Conversely, a particular theme of men's health manifests differently at different ages, carrying different socio-cultural implications, and even from a physiological-medical perspective, requires different solutions. The most typical example of this is sexual health.
