Sexual dysfunction refers to a disruption in any aspect of male sexual function that affects its completeness. Its causes can be congenital or acquired. According to modern medical research, acquired sexual dysfunction is generally curable. However, it is essential to address the underlying cause through proper diagnosis and treatment, and more importantly, to alleviate psychological burdens and eliminate feelings of distress and depression. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, declining sexual function falls under the category of kidney deficiency. Symptoms of kidney deficiency include: frequent lower back pain and weak legs, dizziness, tinnitus, and easy fatigue. Those who are more sensitive to cold, especially experiencing cold feet in winter, indicate kidney yang deficiency; those with night sweats and hot palms and soles indicate kidney yin deficiency. Its formation is mostly due to excessive mental or physical exertion, or pre-existing conditions such as seminal emission or masturbation. Among deficiency syndromes, kidney yang deficiency is the most common.

For those suffering from sexual dysfunction or declining sexual function, the diet should prioritize high-quality protein, followed by various minerals and trace elements. Experts believe that daily calcium intake should not be less than 700 mg; otherwise, lower back pain or twitching in the hands and feet may occur after sexual activity. Iron deficiency can easily cause fatigue, weakness, and paleness; therefore, it is advisable to regularly consume seaweed, dried shrimp, laver, black fungus, soy products, and bone broth. Zinc deficiency can cause testicular atrophy, leading to decreased libido. Oysters and animal liver are high in zinc. Furthermore, attention should be paid to supplementing various vitamins, especially vitamin E, which can regulate gonadal function and increase sperm motility. Vitamin E is generally found in the highest concentrations in vegetable oils, such as corn oil and soybean oil, and is also present in relatively large amounts in peanut oil, sesame oil, and rapeseed oil.

In traditional Chinese medicine, sparrow meat, eggs, and brain are considered to "strengthen yang and replenish essence, nourish the kidneys and strengthen the lower back," and have the effect of "invigorating yang and enabling fertility." As early as the Tang Dynasty, some people used sparrow meat and Cnidium monnieri to make a paste, which was then made into pills called "Yiniao Wan" to treat hypoactive sexual function.

While the above-mentioned dishes and remedies are all beneficial for sexual dysfunction and sexual decline, the first five are more tonifying of Yang and are suitable for those with kidney Yang deficiency; the latter two are more tonifying of Yin and are suitable for those with kidney deficiency. They are all suitable for deficiency syndromes. However, they are ineffective for sexual dysfunction and sexual decline caused by emotional depression, dampness retention in the lower abdomen, or varicose veins and poor blood flow in the penis. Blindly taking these should be avoided.
