Part 8: Adjusting to Shyness, Indecisiveness, and a Fault-Finding Mindset

8. Shyness

In real life, we do encounter very shy people. On the one hand, they lack self-confidence, dislike public appearances, have no interest in competing with others, hesitate when faced with problems, and appear to be poor at socializing. On the other hand, they are often thoughtful and considerate of others. Excessive shyness can make people passive and conservative, indulging in their own little world, which is detrimental to success and may even cause psychological problems.

Adjustment

(1) Enhance awareness. It's important to understand that personality develops gradually over time. If you've already developed a shy personality, don't deliberately strive to be outgoing and extroverted, as shy people also have many advantages. To avoid shyness, the key is to think less about yourself and more about others, social value, and how to interact with people. Furthermore, you must have a correct understanding of yourself, acknowledging that shyness is a weakness and recognizing the strengths of others. This way, when others notice your shyness, you won't feel nervous or try to hide it, and you'll adopt a more easygoing attitude. Only in this way can your relationships with others become closer and more friendly.

(2) Be honest with yourself. Be warm and cheerful, and show that you enjoy interacting with others. If you remain silent all day, others will not want to bother you. Be good at and enjoy expressing yourself, and make others enjoy talking to you. You will also gain happiness, and you will naturally get rid of the shadow of shyness.

(3) Pay attention to others. In daily life, pay attention to the actions and hobbies of others. When interacting with them, look for topics they like, people or things they are interested in. This will make them feel that you are approachable and allow you to forget your shyness in a harmonious social atmosphere.

9. Indecisiveness

Indecisiveness and a lack of resolve are common phenomena in life. When shopping, some people are concerned with both price and brand, often comparing prices repeatedly and wavering in their decision. They end up visiting many stores numerous times, unable to make a final choice. This mentality manifests itself in various aspects of life, both in personal relationships and at work.

Adjustment

(1) Self-reliance. Cultivate the courage and confidence to be self-reliant, independent, self-strengthening, and self-reliant, and develop the independence of one's will and good qualities.

(2) Decide what to keep and what to discard. Don’t strive for perfection. “Nothing is perfect.” As long as you do not violate the major principles, you can decide what to keep and what to discard.

(3) Courage and insight. A person's decision-making ability is closely related to their knowledge and experience. The more knowledge and experience a person has, the higher their decision-making ability; conversely, the less knowledge and experience they have, the lower their decision-making ability. This is what is commonly referred to as "courage and insight, insight and courage".

(4) Proactive thinking. "If you are prepared, you will succeed; if you are not prepared, you will fail." Regularly using your brain and studying and thinking diligently are the prerequisites and foundations for having your own opinions at critical moments.

(5) Stay calm in the face of adversity. Eliminate external interference and suggestions, stabilize your emotions, and carefully analyze the situation from one aspect to another and from the surface to the core. This will also help cultivate a decisive will.

10. A nitpicking mentality

Many people strive for perfection and become overly critical, ultimately lowering their quality of life. By focusing excessively on trivial details, they torment themselves, leading to mental exhaustion, a sour mood, and general fatigue.

Adjustment

(1) Be a little "vague". What's the point of understanding some trivial matters clearly? As for some less important things, a basic understanding is enough. There's no need to get bogged down in details, scrutinize every aspect, or nitpick. Only by being "vague" about some small things can you truly savor the joys of life and have enough energy to handle important matters, thereby making discoveries and gaining insights. In this way, your state of mind will naturally become more relaxed.

(2) Adjust your values. You nitpick because you take many trivial things too seriously, which is certainly not the case. In one's life, what truly deserves attention and careful handling are the events, opportunities, and setbacks that can change one's destiny. There is no need to be overly cautious; that only increases one's psychological burden.

11. Careless attitude

Carelessness is a common psychological phenomenon, referring to errors made in work and study due to lack of concentration or a careless attitude. Carelessness not only affects work efficiency but can also lead to serious consequences.

Adjustment

(1) Maintain a moderate level of tension. Psychological research shows that when emotions are excessively tense or not tense at all, intellectual efficiency is at its worst; when emotions are in a moderate state of tension, intellectual efficiency is often at its best. Therefore, maintaining a moderate level of tension is also an effective way to prevent carelessness;

(2) Focus your attention. Learn to keep your attention focused on the task at hand.

(3) Eliminate bad habits. Some people develop careless habits over time due to frequent carelessness. In this case, correcting bad habits is the fundamental solution to overcome carelessness.

First, cultivate the good habit of meticulousness. Simply overcoming bad habits relies solely on willpower; however, cultivating good habits simultaneously disrupts the conditioned reflexes formed by bad habits through negative induction mechanisms in the cerebral cortex. This approach is not only more effective but also requires less mental energy. Therefore, in work and study, we should consciously adhere to high standards, strict requirements, and a sense of order, carefully checking and verifying our work after completion. Over time, this will become second nature.

Secondly, specific methods should also be studied. Taking the habit of carelessly writing misspelled words as an example, the main reason for misspelling words is the generalization of conditioned reflexes. To eliminate misspelling words, it is necessary to repeatedly reinforce easily confused words, that is, to carefully analyze them from the combination of sound, form and meaning, until they are fully mastered.
