Unhealthy lifestyle habits leading to male infertility and the impact of improper sexual intercourse methods on fertility
What unhealthy lifestyle habits can lead to male infertility?
Men's lifestyles today are very different from those of the past, and many of these unhealthy habits can affect male fertility.
(1) Wearing skinny jeans
Wearing tight jeans not only compresses male reproductive organs and affects the normal development of the testicles, but also hinders sperm growth and survival due to poor ventilation and heat dissipation. This is because the temperature of the testicles needs to be about 2°C lower than the body temperature to produce sperm.
(2) Long-distance cycling
Many men enjoy cycling, especially racing bikes. However, because the handlebars of racing bikes are lower than the seat, the center of gravity leans forward, increasing the curvature of the lower back. This causes the testicles and prostate gland in the perineum to be pressed tightly against the saddle, leading to ischemia, edema, and inflammation after prolonged pressure. This can affect sperm production and the normal secretion of prostatic fluid and semen, potentially causing infertility. Therefore, men should not ride racing bikes for extended periods; the daily limit should not exceed one hour.
(3) Frequent hot baths
The testes require an environment 1-1.5°C lower than normal body temperature to produce sperm. Studies have shown that soaking in 43-44°C water for 20 minutes for three consecutive days can reduce sperm density in men with previously normal levels to below 10 million/ml, a condition that can persist for up to three weeks. This is the basis for the "thermal contraception method" researched in recent years. Therefore, frequent and prolonged hot baths are unsuitable for infertile patients with low sperm counts and motility. Of course, one or two short hot baths per week are generally fine. Young people should be cautious about sauna baths, and their regular baths should be at a lower water temperature and for shorter durations.
(4) Poor mental state
Long-term mental depression, frustration, pessimism, and worry affect the function of the cerebral cortex, resulting in instability in the body's nervous, endocrine, testicular spermatogenesis, and sexual functions, often leading to infertility.
(5) Malnutrition
Human sperm production is related to nutritional levels in the diet, so it is essential to consume sufficient amounts of zinc, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Malnutrition or an unbalanced diet can affect sperm production and quality. Therefore, it is advisable to eat more milk, eggs, lean meat, fish, fresh fruits (especially apples), and vegetables.
(6) Irregular or inappropriate sexual activity
Too frequent sexual activity can affect sperm quality; while too infrequent sexual activity increases the chances of missing the woman's ovulation period, thus reducing the chances of pregnancy; while interrupted intercourse and excessive masturbation can not only cause abnormal congestion of the reproductive organs, but also hinder sperm production and maturation.
Can improper sexual intercourse methods cause infertility?
Improper sexual intercourse methods, including incorrect sexual habits, frequency, and timing, not only affect sexual happiness but can even impact fertility. Conversely, properly arranged sexual activity can increase the chances of pregnancy. Improper sexual intercourse methods are mainly reflected in the following aspects.
(1) Sexual habits
Among infertile couples lacking sex education, many engage in intercourse during menstruation, mistakenly believing it increases the chances of conception. In fact, intercourse during menstruation can stimulate the body to produce antisperm antibodies, leading to immunologic infertility. It can also cause ascending bacterial infections, resulting in inflammation or blockage of the fallopian tubes, thus causing infertility. Some couples develop the habit of urinating immediately after intercourse to prevent urinary tract infections, which is understandable from a hygiene perspective. However, this practice may not be suitable for infertile couples in the long term, as it can cause significant semen leakage, especially during ovulation. This habit should be changed.
(2) Frequency of sexual activity
If a couple has sex too frequently, the sperm supply may be insufficient and the quality may be poor, naturally affecting fertilization. Therefore, frequent intercourse often backfires.
(3) Timing of sexual intercourse
Some couples live apart and are accustomed to having sex only on Saturdays, making it difficult to ovulate during the ovulation period. In such cases, the woman should predict her ovulation period and adjust her visit schedule to increase her chances of conception.
(4) Lack of sex education
Especially when couples first get married, they often lack sexual knowledge, which can lead to sexual dysfunction and infertility. Healthy sexual knowledge can eliminate fear and discomfort associated with sex for both partners.
